Where in Corfu?
This is the photograph which, when published on the front cover of The Corfiot Magazine of December 2008, prompted a local man - born and bred on the island - to comment 'No way in the world is that place in Corfu!' It is, though. And it's one of innumerable spots on Corfu which remain unrecognised, and are still completely off the well-trod tourist trail. Metaphorically and sometimes literally, off the Corfu map.
Corfu On the Map
If you - or if you live here, your friends - have visited Corfu on many occasions, you are sure to have 'done' the main tourist sites; first of all the must-sees of Corfu's Grand Island Tour, like Paleokastritsa, the Achillion and Mouse Island View. Then, a holiday or two down the line, you'll become a little more adventurous, perhaps taking a drive along the North East Coast, over the Troumpetta Pass, or up to the summit of Pantokrator. Maybe you'll even have taken a short walk around the lanes and alleyways of one of Corfu's more popular villages.
Corfu Off the Map
But lurking all over the countryside are corners which, however many times you've visited, you are unlikely to have come across - ones which are definitely in none of the guidebooks. These are the locations which this guide aims to share with you: locations which I have discovered - sometimes by accident - during the course of 25 years of exploring Corfu. You'll find chapels in isolated spots; shady water springs; undiscovered beaches; dramatic, hidden ruins; villages off the beaten track; drives in areas the tour buses miss. With dozens of unique venues for you to explore, plus eight car trips, the best picnic spot, general information about Corfu's traditions, and a glimpse of 'Alternative' or 'New Age' Corfu, here is Corfu Off the Map. Yes, you'll have to make a little effort. But you'll uncover a different aspect of this unique island of Corfu, and, this year, experience a holiday with a difference.
